COZY FREEDOM

I was 6 years old when I took my first ballet steps and instantly fell in love with the feeling I experience when I dance: a strange mix of freedom, warmth, and coziness. When I dance, I forget the world around me for a moment. I can just be in the moment.

Of all the styles I learned, Martha Graham’s modern dance is closest to me. Graham expressed her emotions through movement and told powerful stories with her dance. My teacher Wiske could do that like no other. Well past my 25th, I danced her stories on stage, mostly in groups, but occasionally solo.

Even today, I still dance and seek out that blissful mix of freedom, warmth, and coziness. I’ve tried to capture that feeling in the Dancing Queen sweater.

When do you experience the feeling of freedom? When does the world momentarily disappear for you?
