IN THE SMALL KITCHEN
I designed ‘Backed by Love’ as a memory of my first knitting lessons with my grandmother: I still remember sitting in the small kitchen. A flowerpot was turned upside down on the burning gas stove, heating the room. There was no hot water, no bathroom, and the toilet was outside in the yard. But I was allowed to learn to knit!
With those needles that were way too long and my arms that were way too short, I did it: stitch by stitch, needle by needle. With every stitch my grandmother taught me to knit, she passed on a stitch of love. I don’t remember anything about my very first swatch, but I do remember that a few weeks later I conjured my first sweater from my needles: a sleeveless vest with dark blue and white stripes.
